Cardamom requires patience — germination takes 20–30 days and plants take 3–4 years to produce pods. However, they are beautiful, aromatic ornamental plants even before fruiting.
Cardamom is a tropical plant needing warm (20–35°C), humid conditions with partial shade. Grows naturally in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing. Plant 1 cm deep in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Keep consistently moist and in partial shade.
Start in a 6-inch pot and re-pot as it grows — Cardamom eventually reaches 1.5–3 metres tall and needs a 20–30 litre container or garden bed.
