Fresh — Great for Germination · Collected recently — great time to sow
Why is this approximate?

Freshness status shown above is an approximate estimate derived from this species' typical collection period and reported seed longevity. It does not reflect verified testing of this specific batch and should be treated as general guidance only.

Seed germination is a biological process dependent on multiple variables outside our control, including but not limited to storage conditions prior to and following purchase, sowing technique, soil composition and drainage, ambient and soil temperature, humidity, light exposure, and watering practices. Even under optimal growing conditions and correct pre-treatment, no seed lot can be guaranteed to achieve 100% germination, and natural variation in individual seed viability is expected. SeedsCart does not guarantee germination outcomes and is not liable for germination failure arising from growing conditions, handling, or environmental factors beyond the point of sale.

Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Invasive Species

Listed among the IUCN's worst invasive species globally and prohibited in some regions (including Florida) for forming dense, fast-spreading thickets that crowd out native vegetation. Widely and legally grown across much of the tropics including India, but check local regulations and monitor for unwanted spread.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 6-11 days
1

Pre-Treatment

Soak seed in room-temperature water for 6 hours before sowing — this is usually enough for reliable germination. Trials combining scarification with gibberellic acid pushed germination as high as 98%, though a simple soak is sufficient for most home growing. Important note: this species is listed among the IUCN's worst invasive species globally and is a prohibited species in some regions (including Florida) due to its ability to form dense, fast-spreading thickets that crowd out native vegetation. It's widely grown and naturalized across much of the tropics, including India, but worth checking local regulations before planting at scale, and monitoring for unwanted spread.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix. This is a very fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing legume that tolerates poor soils, drought, and salinity well.
3

Sowing

Sow the soaked seed 1.5-2cm deep.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep moderately moist. Germination is fast and reliable, typically within 6-11 days. Extremely fast-growing once established — the species' vigor is exactly why it's valued for erosion control and fodder, but also why it can become a management concern if left unchecked.

Tips

  • This species is a recognized global invasive — it spreads readily and can form dense thickets; monitor and manage growth if planting outside a controlled agroforestry setting A simple 6-hour room-temperature soak is enough for reliable germination — no need for more elaborate treatment for typical use Extremely fast-growing and drought/salt tolerant, valued for fodder and erosion control specifically because of this vigor
