Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 10-20 days
1

Pre-Treatment

No pre-treatment needed for fresh seed. Neem seed loses viability quickly (within a few weeks at ambient storage), so sow as soon as possible after purchase. If seed is more than 3-4 weeks old, soak in room-temperature water for 12-24 hours before sowing to soften the seed coat and improve moisture uptake.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Fill 15x25cm polybags with a well-drained mix of sand, soil and compost/FYM in a 1:1:1 ratio. Keep the nursery bed in partial shade for the first 2 weeks after sowing, then move into full sun.
3

Sowing

Sow one seed per polybag at 1.5-2cm depth, hilum facing sideways. Space polybags 20-25cm apart for easy handling. Water immediately after sowing.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep soil consistently moist, not waterlogged. Germination begins in 10-15 days and completes by around 3 weeks. Once seedlings reach 20-25cm (roughly 6-8 months), they're ready for field transplant, ideally timed to the monsoon onset.

Tips

  • Fresh seed is the single biggest factor — don't buy or store neem seed long-term before sowing Provide partial shade at first; full sun scorches young seedlings Neem tolerates drought well but seedlings rot quickly in standing water
