Growing & Establishment

Cover crop and green manure seeds are typically broadcast or line-sown into prepared seedbeds. Most species establish quickly under warm, moist conditions. Green biomass is incorporated into the soil before flowering to maximise nitrogen and organic matter contribution. Many species in this category also serve as fodder crops, live hedges, or understory plants in mixed agroforestry systems.

Use in India

Green manuring is widely recommended under Indian organic and sustainable farming guidelines and has been practised for centuries across South Asia. These species are well-adapted to tropical and subtropical agro-climatic zones across India, making them valuable for soil health management in both rainfed and irrigated farming systems.

Seeds are sourced from certified farms and natural stands across India. All batches are tested for germination before dispatch. Bulk supply is available for farm-scale, commercial, and institutional buyers — contact us for trade pricing. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 7-14 days (fresh seed)
1

Pre-Treatment

Fresh seed typically doesn't need scarification — just a 24-hour water soak is usually enough, with fresh seed reaching 90-100% germination this way. If seed has been stored for a while and germination seems poor, scarification (nicking the coat or a brief acid treatment) has been shown in trials to meaningfully improve results for older or lower-vigor seed. Important safety note: the mature plant's seed pods are covered in fine irritant hairs that cause intense itching and skin irritation on contact (hence the name 'itch bean') — handle pods and mature plant material with gloves. The raw seed itself also contains compounds that are toxic if eaten without proper processing.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix. This is a vigorous climbing legume, valued as a cover crop for soil improvement and nitrogen fixation.
3

Sowing

Sow 2.5-4cm deep.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep moderately moist. Germination is generally quick and reliable with fresh, soaked seed. Seed viability holds for about 2 years in cool, dry storage, declining afterward. Plan for a support structure, as this is a vigorous climbing vine.

Tips

  • Fresh seed just needs a 24-hour soak — reaches 90-100% germination without needing scarification The mature plant's pods have intensely irritating hairs — always handle with gloves once plants are established, not just at the seed stage Seed viability drops after about 2 years even in good storage — use reasonably fresh seed for best results
