Trifolium resupinatum (Persian Clover) is a grasses & fodder species sourced from Indian natural stands, suited for soil improvement, nitrogen fixation, and green manuring.

Botanical Synonyms Galearia resupinata
Common Names Persian Clover
Plant Form Grasses & Fodder
Germination 30-90%
Seed Longevity 6-12months
Seed Treatment deep-freeze for 15 days, mechanical scarification for 5 minutes and chemical scarification for 15 minutes

Growing & Establishment

Cover crop and green manure seeds are typically broadcast or line-sown into prepared seedbeds. Most species establish quickly under warm, moist conditions. Green biomass is incorporated into the soil before flowering to maximise nitrogen and organic matter contribution. Many species in this category also serve as fodder crops, live hedges, or understory plants in mixed agroforestry systems.

Use in India

Green manuring is widely recommended under Indian organic and sustainable farming guidelines and has been practised for centuries across South Asia. These species are well-adapted to tropical and subtropical agro-climatic zones across India, making them valuable for soil health management in both rainfed and irrigated farming systems.

Seeds are sourced from certified farms and natural stands across India. All batches are tested for germination before dispatch. Bulk supply is available for farm-scale, commercial, and institutional buyers — contact us for trade pricing. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 5-14 days
1

Pre-Treatment

No pre-treatment is required for most seed lots, though some hard-seeded varieties benefit from scarification. Soft-seeded types germinate quickly and easily, which is actually a consideration for timing: sowing at the wrong time of year (into summer heat) can mean young plants dry out before establishing, since these varieties don't hold back for better conditions the way hard-seeded types do.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained to moderately heavy soil — this species is genuinely tolerant of clay and poor drainage, more so than many clovers. Soil pH should be above 6.
3

Sowing

Broadcast seed at a shallow depth, about 0.6cm (1/4 inch).
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep moist until established. This is a winter annual in most climates — best sown in autumn (September-October) rather than spring, so young plants establish through cooler, wetter conditions rather than facing early heat stress. Very sensitive to weed competition in its first year; if heavy weed pressure is expected, some growers crop the area for a season or two first to reduce weeds before sowing. Young shoots are eaten as a vegetable in parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Tips

  • Sow in autumn, not spring or summer — this winter annual establishes best through cooler conditions and struggles if young plants face early heat Genuinely sensitive to weed competition in its first year — established weed pressure can outcompete new seedlings More tolerant of heavy clay and poor drainage than many clover species
