Mimosa pudica (Sensitive Plant, Touch-me-not, Shame Plant or Live-and-die) is a ornamental shrub species sourced from Indian natural stands, suited for landscaping, live fencing, and ecological restoration.

Botanical Synonyms Mimosa hispidula Kunth
Common Names Sensitive Plant, Touch-me-not, Shame Plant or Live-and-die
Plant Form Ornamental Shrub
Seed Treatment Sulphuric acid treatment for 20 minutes

Growing & Establishment

Shrub and climber seeds are best raised in nursery trays or polybags before transplanting to the field. Most species prefer full sun and well-drained soils. Scarification of hard seed coats improves germination speed significantly. Transplanting during or immediately after the monsoon gives best field establishment under Indian growing conditions.

Use in India

Native shrubs and climbing plants are increasingly valued in Indian landscape design, urban greening projects, and ecological restoration work. Many species in this category are important components of traditional village hedgerows, provide habitat and food for wildlife, and serve multiple ecological roles in farm boundaries and degraded land rehabilitation.

Seeds are sourced from established natural populations and cultivation zones across India. Bulk quantities are available for landscape contractors, nurseries, and ecological restoration programmes. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 7-15 days
1

Pre-Treatment

Commercial nurseries sometimes use a brief sulfuric acid treatment to break this species' hard seed coat, but for home growing, mechanical scarification (a light nick or gentle sanding) followed by a 24-hour warm water soak is a safer and effective alternative that avoids handling concentrated acid.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix in trays or small pots.
3

Sowing

Sow shallow, about 0.5cm deep, given the seed's small size.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep consistently moist. Germination is generally reliable following scarification and soaking. This species is well known for its rapid leaf-folding response to touch, making it a popular curiosity planting.

Tips

  • Scarification plus a warm water soak is a safer home alternative to the acid treatment used commercially, with good results Popular as a novelty/curiosity plant for its touch-sensitive leaves, so consider placement where the response can be enjoyed
