Good to Sow — Best Used Soon · A little past peak — sow soon for best results
Why is this approximate?

Freshness status shown above is an approximate estimate derived from this species' typical collection period and reported seed longevity. It does not reflect verified testing of this specific batch and should be treated as general guidance only.

Seed germination is a biological process dependent on multiple variables outside our control, including but not limited to storage conditions prior to and following purchase, sowing technique, soil composition and drainage, ambient and soil temperature, humidity, light exposure, and watering practices. Even under optimal growing conditions and correct pre-treatment, no seed lot can be guaranteed to achieve 100% germination, and natural variation in individual seed viability is expected. SeedsCart does not guarantee germination outcomes and is not liable for germination failure arising from growing conditions, handling, or environmental factors beyond the point of sale.

Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 15-30 days
1

Pre-Treatment

Remove the hard outer seed coat (decoating) before sowing — research shows decoated seed germinates noticeably faster than seed sown with the coat intact. Jamun seed is recalcitrant, meaning it doesn't tolerate drying out, so sow soon after extracting from the fruit.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained, rich mix in polybags. Jamun seed is polyembryonic (up to four embryos per seed), so don't be surprised if more than one seedling emerges from a single seed — usually up to three will actually germinate.
3

Sowing

Sow the decoated seed 1.5-2cm deep, one per polybag (expect possible multiple seedlings from polyembryony).
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep consistently moist; do not let the seed dry out before or during germination given its recalcitrant nature. If multiple seedlings emerge from one seed, they can be separated and potted individually once established.

Tips

  • Removing the hard seed coat before sowing speeds up germination measurably compared to sowing with the coat on This seed doesn't store well — sow soon after it's extracted from the fruit rather than holding onto it Multiple seedlings from one seed is normal for this species (polyembryony), not a sign of anything unusual
