Stylosanthes hamata (Caribbean Stylo, cv Verano) is a grasses & fodder species sourced from Indian natural stands, suited for soil improvement, nitrogen fixation, and green manuring.

Botanical Synonyms Hedysarum hamatum L. , Stylosanthes eriocarpa S.F.Blake
Common Names Caribbean Stylo, cv Verano
Plant Form Grasses & Fodder
Seeds per kg (approx.) 270000 seeds in the pod
Seed Treatment soaked in water for 10-12 hours to soften the hard coat. After that seeds are treated with rhizobium culture @ 200g per 10 kg of seeds

Growing & Establishment

Cover crop and green manure seeds are typically broadcast or line-sown into prepared seedbeds. Most species establish quickly under warm, moist conditions. Green biomass is incorporated into the soil before flowering to maximise nitrogen and organic matter contribution. Many species in this category also serve as fodder crops, live hedges, or understory plants in mixed agroforestry systems.

Use in India

Green manuring is widely recommended under Indian organic and sustainable farming guidelines and has been practised for centuries across South Asia. These species are well-adapted to tropical and subtropical agro-climatic zones across India, making them valuable for soil health management in both rainfed and irrigated farming systems.

Seeds are sourced from certified farms and natural stands across India. All batches are tested for germination before dispatch. Bulk supply is available for farm-scale, commercial, and institutional buyers — contact us for trade pricing. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 14-21 days
1

Pre-Treatment

This species has a genuinely hard seed coat — research shows over 85% of seed is 'hard-seeded' (physically dormant due to a water-impermeable coat) regardless of variety. Scarification (a light nick or sanding) meaningfully improves and speeds germination for home growing, since the natural dormancy-breaking process (seasonal temperature cycling, or passage through a grazing animal's gut) isn't practical to replicate outside pasture conditions.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix; this species tolerates poor soils reasonably well, though it won't thrive in pure sand or heavy clay.
3

Sowing

For broadcast sowing, mixing seed with sand (roughly 1 part seed to 2 parts sand) helps achieve even distribution, given how small the seed is.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Ensure consistent moisture during germination without waterlogging. Typical germination takes 2-3 weeks. This is a drought-resistant, short-lived perennial forage legume, commonly ready for its first harvest 75-80 days after sowing, with follow-up cuts about every 30 days.

Tips

  • Scarification genuinely helps — over 85% of seed is naturally hard-seeded and dormant without it, and the plant's usual dormancy-breaking methods (seasonal weathering, animal digestion) aren't practical for typical home sowing Mixing fine seed with sand at sowing time helps achieve even coverage when broadcasting Drought-resistant and tolerant of poor soils once established, though it won't thrive in pure sand or heavy clay
