Germination Guide

Typical germination time 20-60 days (after 90-120 day stratification)

Pre-Treatment

Clean off all fruit pulp, then soak in water for 12 hours before cold stratification. Requires a genuine cold period: stratify in moist sand or peat inside a sealed bag, refrigerated, for 90-120 days. Safety note: the seeds themselves contain cyanogenic compounds and shouldn't be eaten — the fruit flesh is fine, but avoid ingesting the pips.

Pre-Germination Prep

After stratification, warm the seed back up to spring-like conditions (around 20°C) to trigger germination. Seed is naturally coated in a slippery mucilage, which is normal and doesn't need to be removed.

Sowing

Sow the stratified seed 2-3cm deep in a rich, compost-based mix, tamped firm.

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep consistently moist. Germination can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months even after correct stratification — patience is needed. Growth is quick once seedlings emerge, often ready to plant out the same autumn. Seed-grown quince can also be used as rootstock for pear trees from their second or third year.
