Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 10-14 days
1

Pre-Treatment

Sources genuinely disagree here: some commercial sellers recommend a hot water soak (60-80°C, 12-24 hours), but the Plants For A Future reference database explicitly states no pre-treatment is needed for this species, and that soaking actually reduces germination while heating can kill the seed outright. Given this, the safer default is to sow seed as received, without heat treatment.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix. This species tolerates a wide pH range (5-8) and poor soils well, and is genuinely drought-tolerant even as a young plant.
3

Sowing

Sow 1-2cm deep, one seed per polybag or into nursery beds.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep moderately moist without waterlogging. Germination typically takes about 2 weeks without any treatment. Rhizobium inoculation can help as this is a nitrogen-fixing legume, though it isn't essential. Best raised in nursery beds and planted out at around 12 months old. Safety note: the sap can cause skin irritation and notable eye irritation, similar to several other legume tree species — take reasonable care when pruning or handling cut material.

Tips

  • Skip the hot water soak some sellers suggest — a reputable horticultural reference found it reduces germination for this species, and heat can kill the seed outright A hardy, nitrogen-fixing, drought-tolerant species that grows well even in poor soils Sap can irritate skin and eyes — take care when pruning or handling cut branches
