Pre-Treatment

No pre-treatment is strictly required, but a 12-24 hour warm water soak is commonly recommended and can help even out germination. Note: jojoba is dioecious — individual plants are either male or female, and you need both to get seed production, which is worth knowing if you're growing for oil rather than just as an ornamental.

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained, sandy mix. This is a genuinely drought-adapted desert species and is notably prone to root rot if kept too wet, even as a seedling.

Sowing

Sow about 1-2.5cm deep in well-drained soil.

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep lightly moist, never soggy, and warm (24-29°C is a commonly cited ideal). Germination typically takes 2-4 weeks, though it can occasionally extend to 2-3 months. Very drought-tolerant once established, needing minimal water long-term.
