Pistacia vera (Pistachio) is a medicinal herb species sourced from Indian natural stands, suited for reforestation, agroforestry, and social forestry.

Botanical Synonyms Pistacia trifolia, Pistacia macrophylla, Pistacia officinarum
Common Names Pistachio
Plant Form Medicinal Herb
Seed Treatment Soak the seed in room temperature water for 24–48 hours

Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 10-20 days (after 6-week stratification)
1

Pre-Treatment

Soak seed in room-temperature water for 24-48 hours, then cold stratify: roll the seed loosely in a damp (not wet) cloth or paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate at 1-2°C for 6 weeks. This stratification step is essential, not optional — growers who skip it report zero germination even after weeks of waiting.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

After the 6-week cold period, bring seed to room temperature (21-32°C) and check every other day for visible root growth, removing seed from the damp towel as soon as a root appears.
3

Sowing

Plant germinated seed (with visible root) directly into soil, root-down.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep in a warm, protected spot (greenhouse or indoors) until any frost risk has passed, then transplant into larger containers as needed. Scarification alone, without the cold stratification step, gives disappointing results in trials — the combination of both matters.

Tips

  • The 6-week cold stratification is genuinely essential — growers who skip it and only soak the seed report no germination at all, even after extended waiting Check refrigerated seed for root growth every other day once the stratification period ends, and pot up promptly once a root shows This is genuine pistachio (Pistacia vera) — seed-grown trees are mainly used as rootstock, since named pistachio varieties are grafted for reliable, consistent nut production
