Why is this approximate?

Freshness status shown above is an approximate estimate derived from this species' typical collection period and reported seed longevity. It does not reflect verified testing of this specific batch and should be treated as general guidance only.

Seed germination is a biological process dependent on multiple variables outside our control, including but not limited to storage conditions prior to and following purchase, sowing technique, soil composition and drainage, ambient and soil temperature, humidity, light exposure, and watering practices. Even under optimal growing conditions and correct pre-treatment, no seed lot can be guaranteed to achieve 100% germination, and natural variation in individual seed viability is expected. SeedsCart does not guarantee germination outcomes and is not liable for germination failure arising from growing conditions, handling, or environmental factors beyond the point of sale.

Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide

Typical germination time 14-21 days

Pre-Treatment

Soak seed in water for 24 hours before sowing to soften the coat. Note: this species self-seeds and naturalizes very readily — it's flagged as potentially invasive by some specialist palm nurseries and has become naturalized well beyond its native range in several regions (including Florida, Bermuda, Hawaii, and parts of the Caribbean). Worth checking local guidance if planting outside a controlled garden setting.

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix. Moderately cold-hardy for a palm, tolerating brief drops to around -5°C once established.

Sowing

Sow about 1.5-2cm deep.

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep consistently moist and warm. Germination typically begins within 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer. This species sprouts very readily from seed — mature trees commonly self-seed prolifically around the base once they reach fruiting age (roughly 5-7 years), which is part of why it can naturalize so easily where introduced.

Tips

This species self-seeds very readily and has naturalized in several regions outside its native range — worth some awareness if planting outside a maintained garden setting A reliable, straightforward germinator once soaked Moderately cold-hardy for a palm, tolerating brief cold snaps down to about -5°C once established
