Fresh — Great for Germination · Collected recently — great time to sow

Why is this approximate?

Freshness status shown above is an approximate estimate derived from this species' typical collection period and reported seed longevity. It does not reflect verified testing of this specific batch and should be treated as general guidance only.

Seed germination is a biological process dependent on multiple variables outside our control, including but not limited to storage conditions prior to and following purchase, sowing technique, soil composition and drainage, ambient and soil temperature, humidity, light exposure, and watering practices. Even under optimal growing conditions and correct pre-treatment, no seed lot can be guaranteed to achieve 100% germination, and natural variation in individual seed viability is expected. SeedsCart does not guarantee germination outcomes and is not liable for germination failure arising from growing conditions, handling, or environmental factors beyond the point of sale.

Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide

Typical germination time 30-45 days (can extend to 90)

Pre-Treatment

Scarify the hard seed coat (a light nick or sanding) and soak in warm-to-hot water for 24 hours. If the seed hasn't visibly swollen (absorbed water) after soaking, nick it more thoroughly and soak again.

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained, sandy mix and keep warm (20-27°C).

Sowing

Sow about 1-2cm deep.

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged — a plastic cover over the pot helps retain warmth and humidity. Germination is variable, commonly 4-6 weeks but sometimes extending to 30-90 days, so patience is worth having. As a legume, this species also fixes nitrogen in the soil. Its young leaves, flower buds, and flowers are eaten in parts of India and Southeast Asia and used in traditional Ayurvedic preparations.

Tips

If seed doesn't visibly swell after the first soak, scarify more thoroughly and soak again — this is the most common fix for slow starters Germination timing genuinely varies (4-6 weeks to 3 months) — don't assume failure too early Unlike many trees in this catalog, this species' flowers, buds, and young leaves are traditionally eaten, not just ornamental
