Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Germination Guide

Typical germination time 20-40 days (with scarification, can extend further)

Pre-Treatment

Commercial operations sometimes pre-treat baobab seed with concentrated sulfuric acid for around 12 hours to break its very hard coat, but for home growing, a safer alternative is to scarify the seed coat (nick or sand it) and then soak in hot water for 24-48 hours — slower than the acid method, but effective and avoids handling concentrated acid.

Pre-Germination Prep

Use deep pots with a well-drained, sandy mix. Baobab develops a substantial taproot and swollen trunk base even as a young seedling.

Sowing

Sow the scarified, soaked seed 2-3cm deep in a deep pot.

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep warm and moderately moist; avoid waterlogging, as baobab is adapted to arid conditions and can rot in overly wet soil. Germination is slow and can be uneven even with treatment.
