Pre-Treatment

No pre-treatment is required. As a legume, Rhizobium inoculation can improve nodulation and nitrogen fixation, though it isn't essential for germination itself.

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix. Alfalfa germinates best around 20°C — noticeably cooler temperatures (around 10°C) measurably slow and reduce germination in trials.

Sowing

Sow shallow, about 1-1.5cm deep.

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep moderately moist. Germination is generally quick and reliable at the right temperature, typically within a week or two. This species has an unusually long seed life — properly stored seed has been documented to retain some viability even after 23 years, though for reliable results fresher seed is always preferable.
