Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 10-20 days
1

Pre-Treatment

Treat seed with hot water (soak in water just off the boil) for 3 hours, or alternatively soak in room-temperature water for 6 hours if hot water isn't convenient. Either method softens the seed coat adequately.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a light, well-drained mix in polybags or nursery beds. This species tolerates a range of soil types once established, but germination is more reliable in loose, aerated soil.
3

Sowing

Sow treated seed shallow, about 1cm deep, given its relatively small size. Keep nursery beds in partial shade initially.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep consistently moist. Germination is fairly quick once pre-treatment is done properly. Seedlings grow at a moderate pace; harden off and transplant at 6-9 months.

Tips

  • Hot water treatment (3 hours) is faster than the cold water alternative (6 hours) if you have the option This species is often planted for its medicinal bark and leaves, not just timber, so spacing for accessibility is worth considering at planting
