Germination Guide

Typical germination time 14-35 days

Pre-Treatment

Soak seed in mild hot water for 24 hours to soften the hard seed coat. A cow dung slurry soak (as used traditionally) also works well and has shown strong results in trials.

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix, ideally silt loam with added farmyard manure — trials found this combination outperforms sandy or straight soil mixes. Sunken nursery beds also showed better results than flat or raised beds.

Sowing

Sow pretreated, fresh seed in polybags. Burying seed rather than surface-sowing improves germination odds.

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep consistently moist — germination needs plenty of moisture and takes 2-5 weeks. Fresh seed germinates at a high rate (85-100%) but viability drops quickly once seed has been stored, so use fresh stock where possible. Transplant to the field before the taproot develops too far — this is strongly preferable and mostly successful if done early; avoid clipping roots or shoots, which checks growth considerably.
