Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 6-14 days (of the seed that does germinate)
1

Pre-Treatment

No pre-treatment is needed. Important: before sowing, sort the seed by colour if you can — only black seeds are viable; tan/light-coloured seeds are typically unfertilized and won't germinate. Sowing tan seed along with black wastes effort, not seed viability.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix and keep at a consistent 20-25°C. This species naturally has low germination even under ideal conditions — research trials commonly find 10-40% is typical, with 50-70%+ only achieved under carefully controlled conditions. This isn't a sign anything is wrong with the seed batch; it's an inherent trait of the species.
3

Sowing

Sow shallow, just barely covered, in trays or small pots.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep moist and warm. Sow considerably more seed than the number of plants you actually want, given the naturally low germination rate. Reaches usable leaf-harvest size in about 90-100 days from seed.

Tips

  • Sort for black seed before sowing — pale/tan seeds are typically unfertilized and won't germinate no matter what you do Low germination (commonly just 10-40%) is normal and inherent to this species, not a sign of a bad batch — sow generously Consistent warmth (20-25°C) gives the most reliable results across published trials
