Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 7-15 days (fresh seed only)
1

Pre-Treatment

Sal seed has very short viability and no true dormancy, so pre-treatment is minimal by design: soak seed in water for 12 hours immediately before sowing. Do not delay sowing beyond 1-2 weeks of collection — sal seed viability collapses fast, dropping to near zero within a month of falling from the tree.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Prepare polybags or nursery beds with a light, well-drained forest-loam mix. Sal establishes a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi in the soil, so using soil from under an existing sal stand (even a small handful mixed in) measurably improves seedling vigour if available.
3

Sowing

Sow the winged seed flat, just below the soil surface (0.5-1cm), wing intact. Space 15-20cm apart in nursery beds, or one per polybag.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep consistently moist; germination is fast for fresh seed, typically within 1-2 weeks. Sal seedlings are slow growing initially and put energy into root development before shoot growth — don't judge early progress by height. Field transplant at 8-12 months, at monsoon onset.

Tips

  • Sal seed viability is the single biggest constraint — source from a supplier with a recent, known collection date Inoculating with mycorrhizal soil from an existing sal stand noticeably improves seedling survival Don't expect fast top growth in year one; sal invests in roots first
