Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 7-14 days (estimated from close relative Sesbania grandiflora)
1

Pre-Treatment

No pre-treatment is essential, consistent with its relative Hummingbird Tree (Sesbania grandiflora) already researched in this catalog — a 24-hour water soak can help but this genus is not typically hard-seeded. Note: this species is sometimes misidentified as an invasive weed (occasionally confused with Mimosa pigra or black wattle) by well-meaning landowners, but it is not itself considered a problem species — quite the opposite, it is valued as a beneficial green manure and fodder crop.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix.
3

Sowing

Sow about 1.5-2cm deep.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep moderately moist. This is a genuinely fast-cycling green manure crop — commonly sown before or alongside rice planting, it completes its lifecycle in about 3 months and fully decomposes into the soil within a further month, acting as a natural slow-release fertilizer. Young leaves, flowers, and seeds are edible and used as a pot herb in parts of Southeast Asia, and it also serves as livestock and poultry feed.

Tips

  • Sometimes mistaken for an invasive weed by landowners unfamiliar with it, but it is not itself a problem species — it is a valued, fast-cycling green manure and fodder crop A genuinely useful cover crop for improving soil ahead of rice or other plantings, decomposing fully within about 4 months total Young leaves, flowers, and seeds are edible, used as a pot herb in parts of Southeast Asia
