Botanical Synonyms P. communis Huds.
Common Names Common Plum
Plant Form Fruit Tree
Seed Collection May-June
Seed Longevity 1 year
Seeds per Kg (approx.) 3000-5000
Germination Rate 30-60%
Seed Treatment stratify 40 degrees F 4-5 months.

Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 20-40 days (after 4-5 month stratification)
1

Pre-Treatment

Requires cold stratification: clean the pit, place in moist sand or peat inside a sealed bag, and refrigerate at around 4°C (40°F) for 4-5 months before sowing. This mimics the winter chill plum seed needs to break dormancy.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

After the stratification period, sow into a well-drained potting mix. Seed-grown plums are mainly used as rootstock or for breeding — named varieties are propagated by grafting for consistent fruit.
3

Sowing

Sow the stratified pit about 3-4cm deep.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep moist; germination should follow within a few weeks of sowing after the chilling period is complete. Seed-grown plum trees are genetically variable and typically don't produce fruit identical to the parent, so grafting a known variety is standard for orchard planting.

Tips

  • The 4-5 month cold stratification period is essential — plan sowing timeline well in advance if you want spring seedlings Seed-grown plums won't reliably reproduce the parent fruit's exact qualities; graft for orchard use Refrigerator stratification in a sealed, labelled bag with moist sand is a reliable substitute for natural winter chilling
