Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 14-42 days (can extend to several months)
1

Pre-Treatment

Light scarification with sandpaper can help, though it's optional. Warm water soak (around 29-32°C) for 24-48 hours is commonly recommended. This species genuinely has variable, sometimes compound dormancy (a hard coat plus an internal hormonal block), which explains why growers report wildly different results with the same techniques.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use sterile, moist soil and keep temperature consistently in the 21-29°C range — cooler soil significantly delays or can prevent germination outright; ordinary room temperature is sometimes too cool.
3

Sowing

Sow 1-2.5cm deep.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep consistently moist and warm. Reported germination times vary enormously across growers and sources — anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months — largely reflecting genuine seed dormancy variability in this species rather than technique. If nothing has happened after 3 weeks, re-scarifying more aggressively and trying again is a reasonable next step.

Tips

  • Keep soil consistently warm — this is one of the biggest factors, and cool conditions (including plain room temperature in cooler climates) can stall or prevent germination Wildly inconsistent germination reports for this species are a known, documented issue related to genuine seed dormancy variability, not just technique If nothing sprouts after 3 weeks, don't necessarily give up — re-scarifying and retrying is a reasonable next step
