Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 10-20 days (fresh seed)
1

Pre-Treatment

A 24-hour presoak in water softens the seed coat and speeds early germination, though it isn't strictly essential. Freshness matters far more than treatment — this seed is recalcitrant, can't be dried below about 20% moisture without dying, and holds viability for only 6-9 months even in ideal cold, moist storage.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a fine, well-drained seedbed or small pots — Kadam seed is extremely small and fine.
3

Sowing

Sow on the surface, only lightly covered with a thin dusting of soil or sand — do not bury this fine seed.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Mist lightly to avoid disturbing the tiny seed, and keep at 25-30°C. Germination typically begins within 7-21 days, with fresh, healthy seed reaching 70-90% success within 10-20 days. This is a fast-growing tropical species, frost-tender at every stage — protect from cold if grown outside genuinely warm climates. Seedlings are ready to transplant after 6-8 months.

Tips

  • Sow on the surface — this is an extremely fine seed that needs light and won't germinate if buried Use fresh seed where possible; viability drops off within 6-9 months even under ideal storage This is a genuinely tropical, frost-tender species at every growth stage — not suited to outdoor growing in cool climates
