Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 7-15 days
1

Pre-Treatment

No pre-treatment is essential for this species — sow seed as received. A short 12-hour soak can help synchronise germination timing if sowing a large batch.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix in polybags. Pongamia (Indian Beech) is a hardy, adaptable species that tolerates poor soils well, including saline and waterlogged conditions better than most trees once established.
3

Sowing

Sow 1.5-2cm deep, one seed per polybag.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep moderately moist. Germination is generally quick and reliable without treatment. This is a fast-growing, hardy pioneer species, so nursery period is typically shorter than slow hardwoods — 6-8 months to field-ready.

Tips

  • No special treatment needed — this is one of the easier tree seeds to germinate Pongamia tolerates poor, saline, and waterlogged soils better than most species, making it useful for difficult planting sites Fast growth rate means a shorter nursery period than typical hardwoods
