Seed Longevity 1-6 Months
Seed Treatment Put lotus seeds in the pot (used only for germination) and soak the water about 2 cm deep overnight

Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 7-21 days (after scarification)
1

Pre-Treatment

Scarification is essential, not optional — lotus seed has one of the hardest, most water-impermeable coats in the plant kingdom, and without breaching it, the seed can remain dormant for years or even decades without germinating. Carefully file or nick a small spot on the side of the seed (away from the pointed tip) until you just reach the pale interior, being careful not to damage the embryo itself.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

After scarifying, soak the seed in clean, warm water (around 24-29°C), changing the water daily to keep it fresh and prevent it turning stagnant.
3

Sowing

Once sprouted, plant into heavy loam or clay-rich soil (not sandy soil, which won't hold the plant), with the growing tip left exposed.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

This is an aquatic plant — after planting, submerge the pot so the water level sits a few inches above the soil, and gradually increase water depth as the plant grows. Keep in full sun. Germination after scarification is usually fairly quick, often within one to three weeks.

Tips

  • Scarification is genuinely essential for this species — unscarified seed can remain dormant for years without ever germinating on its own File or nick away from the pointed tip, stopping as soon as you reach the pale interior — going too far can damage the embryo This is an aquatic plant from the seedling stage onward — plan for a submerged pot in clay-rich soil, not ordinary potting mix
