Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 14-28 days
1

Pre-Treatment

Soak seed in fresh water overnight before sowing. This also doubles as a viability check — good seed sinks, while bad or non-viable seed tends to float and can be discarded. Freshness matters a lot: lemon seed doesn't germinate well once it's dried out, so use it soon after extracting from the fruit rather than storing it.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained, fertile mix in a small pot, leaving room at the top.
3

Sowing

Sow about 1.5cm deep, one seed per pot.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and warm (above 21°C ideally) — a plastic bag or wrap over the pot helps retain warmth and moisture. Germination typically takes 3-4 weeks. Seed-grown citrus is genetically variable and mostly used as rootstock; if you want fruit true to a particular variety, grafting is the standard approach, and even then it can take several years to fruit.

Tips

  • Sow soon after extracting the seed — don't let it dry out, as this significantly reduces germination The float test (good seed sinks, bad seed floats) is a quick, reliable way to sort seed before sowing Seed-grown lemon trees are genetically variable and won't necessarily produce fruit identical to the parent — grafting is standard for consistent fruit
