Typical germination time 20-40 days (after stratification)

Pre-Treatment

Requires cold stratification to break dormancy — trials found 60 days at 4°C gave the best results (64% germination). A 24-hour soak beforehand and treatment with gibberellic acid (75ppm) can further improve rates, and cooler incubation (15°C) outperforms warmer conditions (25°C) once stratification is complete.

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained, sandy mix. This species has restricted, patchy natural distribution in the northwest Himalaya and is considered endangered in the wild, partly due to erratic, infrequent seed years and heavy historical harvesting — worth knowing if you're growing it with conservation interest in mind, not just as a nut crop.
