Germination Guide

Typical germination time 21-56 days

Pre-Treatment

Soak seed in warm water for 12-24 hours before sowing. Removing the seed coat entirely speeds germination further (about 15 days vs 21 days with the coat left on), though seedlings from coat-intact seed tend to grow slightly larger initially.

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix — this species is genuinely prone to rot if kept too wet, so err on the drier side between waterings rather than keeping it constantly soggy.

Sowing

Sow 0.5cm deep, or lay on the surface and cover with a thin layer of vermiculite.

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep warm (22-30°C is ideal — a heat mat may be needed in cooler climates) and moist but never wet. Germination is quite variable, ranging from 3-8 weeks. Bael is drought-tolerant once established and takes 1-2 years to begin fruiting, with fruit itself needing about 11 months to ripen on the tree.
