Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 7-42 days
1

Pre-Treatment

Sources differ slightly here: some note this species germinates without any special preparation, while others recommend scarifying the hard seed coat (a light sanding or nick) followed by a 24-hour warm water soak to improve and speed germination. The scarify-and-soak approach is a reasonable default if you want the more reliable result.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a light, well-drained mix of peat and sand. This is a frost-tender tender perennial (hardy roughly zones 8-11) — in cooler climates it's grown as an annual or brought indoors over winter.
3

Sowing

Sow about 0.5-0.7cm deep, barely covered.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep consistently moist and warm (around 18-27°C). Germination is variable, typically 1-6 weeks. This is a vigorous, fast-growing climbing vine — plan for a trellis or support structure, as it can reach considerable length in a single season. Frost will kill top growth; in borderline climates, tubers can be lifted and stored over winter like dahlias.

Tips

  • Scarifying the seed coat before soaking gives more consistent results than sowing untreated, even though some sources say it's not strictly necessary A vigorous climber that needs a trellis or fence to grow on — plan support structures before transplanting In climates with cold winters, the tuberous roots can be lifted and stored (similar to dahlias) rather than treating the whole plant as disposable
