Growing & Establishment

Tree seeds vary widely in their germination requirements. Many Indian hardwood species benefit from pre-sowing treatment — soaking for 12–24 hours, mechanical scarification, or brief hot water treatment to break seed coat dormancy. Polybag nursery raising is the standard method for most plantation species in India. Field transplanting is best timed to coincide with the onset of the monsoon for maximum survival.

Use in India

India's National Afforestation Programme, state forest departments, and private agroforestry initiatives use millions of tree seedlings annually for reforestation, social forestry, and watershed restoration. Native tree species are preferred for ecological projects, carbon sequestration, and farm forestry under national agroforestry schemes.

SeedsCart has supplied tree seeds to nurseries, forest departments, NGOs, plantation companies, and agroforestry projects across India for over 30 years. Seeds are collected from certified natural stands, germination-tested before dispatch, and available in bulk quantities for institutional and commercial buyers. We ship internationally.

Toxic Plant

Contains phototoxic compounds (same family as giant hogweed, though milder) — sap on skin followed by sun exposure can cause irritation or blistering. Wear gloves when handling, cutting, or deadheading.

Germination Guide
Typical germination time 12-20 days
1

Pre-Treatment

No mechanical pre-treatment is needed, but this species genuinely benefits from cold exposure — sowing in autumn and letting seedlings overwinter as small rosettes produces noticeably stronger plants (thicker stems, bigger flowers, blooming 2-4 weeks earlier) than spring sowing. If you only get one sowing in, autumn is the better choice where your climate allows it. Safety note: this plant contains phototoxic compounds (same family as giant hogweed, though much milder) — sap on skin followed by sun exposure can cause irritation or blistering, so wear gloves when handling, cutting, or deadheading, especially in sunny weather.
2

Pre-Germination Prep

Use a well-drained mix. This species develops a taproot early and doesn't transplant well, so direct sowing where it's meant to grow is strongly preferred over starting in trays.
3

Sowing

Sow on the surface or barely covered — this seed needs light to germinate well, so don't bury it.
4

Post-Care & Growing On

Keep evenly moist. Germination takes 12-20 days at a relatively cool 12-24°C — this species actually prefers cooler conditions than many summer annuals. Protect autumn-sown seedlings from slugs and snails, which find them particularly appealing.

Tips

  • Autumn sowing (where climate allows overwintering) produces measurably stronger, earlier-flowering plants than spring sowing — worth planning for if you can This plant's sap is phototoxic — wear gloves when handling or cutting it, particularly in sunny conditions, to avoid skin irritation Direct sow rather than transplant — the taproot doesn't recover well from disturbance
