8 Rare Tropical Tree Seeds You Can Actually Grow in the USA

Most American garden centres carry the same forty varieties of vegetable and flower seeds. If you want something genuinely unusual — a tree species that originated in the Indian subcontinent, the Himalayas, or the wet tropics — you generally have to look further.

SeedsCart specialises in exactly this: rare, ISF-certified tree seeds sourced from 30+ years of expertise in the Indian seed trade. Here are eight species that have genuine appeal for American gardeners, collectors, and homesteaders — with honest notes on growability.

1. Moringa (Moringa oleifera) — The Miracle Tree

Already covered in our Ayurvedic herbs guide, moringa deserves a place on any rare tropical tree list. It is the most nutrient-dense tree species ever measured and grows extraordinarily fast — up to 4 metres in a single season.

Growable in: USDA Zones 9–12 outdoors. Zones 4–8 in containers.
Approximate time to first harvest: 6–8 months from seed.

2. Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album)

One of the world's most valuable trees by weight — genuine Mysore sandalwood oil sells for thousands of dollars per kilogram. Growing sandalwood from seed is a long-term project (10–30 years for heartwood development) but deeply rewarding for patient growers and land investors.

Growing note: Sandalwood is a hemi-parasite — it requires a host plant for the first few years of growth. Leguminous shrubs like pigeon pea or sesbania work well as hosts. Plant within 30–60 cm of the sandalwood seedling.

Growable in: USDA Zones 10–12. Can be trialled in zone 9 with frost protection.

3. Neem (Azadirachta indica)

See our dedicated neem growing guide for full details. One of the most useful trees you can grow in a warm-climate US garden.

Growable in: USDA Zones 9–12.

4. Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus)

The jackfruit produces the largest tree-borne fruit in the world — individual fruits can weigh 30–50 kg. It is becoming increasingly popular in the USA as a meat substitute and tropical fruit. Jackfruit trees have been grown successfully in South Florida and Southern California.

Growable in: USDA Zones 10–12 outdoors. Zone 9 with shelter and frost cloth.
Time to fruit: 3–8 years from seed.
Note: Jackfruit seeds have very short viability — plant within 1 week of receiving for best germination. We dispatch jackfruit seeds air-dried and packed for maximum shelf life.

5. Semal / Red Silk Cotton Tree (Bombax ceiba)

One of India's most spectacular flowering trees. In late winter, before the leaves emerge, the entire tree erupts in bright red flowers that attract birds and bees from miles around. A mature semal in bloom is genuinely unforgettable.

Growable in: USDA Zones 10–12. Fast-growing — can reach 15m in warm climates.
Best for: Large gardens, tropical landscaping, wildlife gardens.

6. Peepal / Sacred Fig (Ficus religiosa)

The Bodhi Tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Peepal is one of the most sacred trees in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and also a significant Ayurvedic plant. It makes a striking specimen tree and bonsai subject — many serious bonsai artists in the USA work with ficus species.

Growable in: USDA Zones 10–12 outdoors. Excellent as a bonsai or container plant in all zones.
Germination: Surface sow tiny seeds on moist compost; keep at 25–30°C.

7. Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo)

A prized hardwood timber tree across South Asia, Indian Rosewood (shisham) is fast-growing and produces beautiful grain. It is also nitrogen-fixing, making it valuable for agroforestry and land restoration projects.

Growable in: USDA Zones 9–11.
Best for: Agroforestry, timber investment, windbreaks.

8. Flame of the Forest (Butea monosperma)

Another spectacular flowering tree — masses of deep orange-red flowers on bare branches in early spring. Used in Ayurveda and produces natural dye from its flowers (used for traditional Indian Holi colours). A striking ornamental for warm-climate American gardens.

Growable in: USDA Zones 9–12.
